Scott Health & Safety Breathing Apparatus is Approved by NIOSH for use in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Incidents

Monroe, N.C. – January 15, 2003 - Scott Health & Safety, a unit of Tyco Fire & Security, announced today that they have been notified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), that several models of the Scott Air-Pak® self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) have been approved by NIOSH to the new voluntary standard for respiratory protection against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents. This standard was generated in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and is designed to ensure first responders are adequately protected from respiratory threats in the event of an attack involving weapons of mass destruction.

"Scott Health & Safety is proud to be the first major manufacturer of self contained breathing apparatus to receive this approval” said Jack Hankins, Director of Sales and Marketing for Scott Health & Safety. “We are committed to the goal of maintaining our reputation as the industry leader in product innovation and securing the NIOSH CBRN approval is another indication of our commitment to this goal,” said Hankins.

After significant discussion with first responders and Scott Health & Safety, NIOSH has acknowledged the need for the ability to upgrade existing SCBAs to the voluntary NIOSH CBRN standard and has agreed to make the approval of upgrades a top priority. Scott Health & Safety plans to be able to provide a NIOSH approved upgrade kit to existing Scott Air-Pak SCBA customers during the spring of 2003.
