Scott Health & Safety Offers New NIOSH-Approved CBRN Powered Air Purifying Respirator

Scott receives NIOSH CBRN approval of its popular C420 powered air purifying respirator providing numerous advantages for first responders in CBRN environments.

(May 7, 2008) – Scott Health & Safety is proud to introduce the C420 Plus CBRN powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) for use by first responders in CBRN domestic preparedness operations. Built on the successful design of the C420 PAPR, the new NIOSH-approved CBRN Plus version incorporates the unique design features of the M120 facepiece with a CBRN Cap-1 canister.

Setting off the C420 Plus CBRN PAPR from other powered air purifying respirators is the tight-fitting Scott M120 facepiece, engineered for maximum comfort and excellent permeation resistance to a wide variety of toxic materials and CBRN agents. No other CBRN gas mask offers a wider range of applications, from CBRN protection to riot control to HAZMAT response. The M120 CBRN facepiece offers rapid deployment, simple disinfection and decontamination, and easy maintenance in a sleek, low profile design featuring a wide full-face lens for increased field of vision. Because the M120 facepiece is a central component of Scott’s CBRN respiratory options, no additional fit testing is needed if using the same model M120 facepiece for other CBRN air purifying applications.

The design of the Scott C420 Plus CBRN PAPR permits first responders to work without worrying about entering or exiting tight spaces in harmful environments. Additionally, its internal fan provides a cooling effect which extends user wear times in humid or hot environments. This is ideal for hostile or extended wear situations, such as decontamination or rescue, since the fanning effect helps keep the facepiece from fogging, while eliminating the additional pulmonary stress associated with a non-powered respirator.

The C420 Plus CBRN PAPR is belt mounted and designed to ride in the small of the wearer’s back for the ultimate in comfort and support. The unit's motor is shielded to MIL 461C so it will not interfere with radio communications. It comes complete with blower unit assembly, waist belt, breathing tube assembly and air flow indicator. Power to the unit is controlled by a single on/off toggle switch. The flexible breathing tube was designed specifically to meet NIOSH CBRN testing and does not restrict head movement. Thorough decontamination against CBRN agents and other industrial chemicals is made easy with detachable parts that can be cleaned according to the situation encountered.
