Scott Health & Safety secures first NIOSH approval allowing
breathing apparatus upgrade for use in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Incidents
Monroe, N.C. – September 17, 2003 – Scott Health & Safety announced today that it has been notified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), that Scott Air-Pak® self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) models meeting the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1981, 1997 standard can be upgraded to the new NIOSH voluntary standard for respiratory protection against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) incidents. This standard is designed to ensure that first responders receive the best possible protection from respiratory threats in the event of an attack involving weapons of mass destruction.
"Scott Health & Safety is proud to be the first manufacturer of self-contained breathing apparatus to offer our users the option of upgrading their older edition models for use in CBRN incidents,” said Jack Hankins, Director of Sales and Marketing for Scott Health & Safety. “We have always held the philosophy of designing our equipment with a building block approach that allows our customers to maintain top-of-the-line protection without having to purchase new breathing apparatus. At Scott Health & Safety, we believe it is our responsibility to be able to provide economical solutions to our customers and this approval is another step in that direction," said Hankins.
Scott Health & Safety is currently pursuing NIOSH approval for NFPA 2002 compliant SCBA models to be upgraded to meet the voluntary NIOSH CBRN standard. This means that within a few months, Scott Health & Safety will be positioned to provide another cost-effective alternative to purchasing new SCBA.
